Week 102 - Miami, Oklahoma

 Hey all!

I woke up this morning like "holy cow I have two weeks left what just happened" so I guess now it's really go time. Lots more cool miracles here in Miami this week, as tends to be the case when you're in an awesome area with an awesome mission companion. It reminded me of a line from one of President Jeffrey R. Holland's messages from two years ago: "I cannot speak fully of that experience here, but I can say that part of what I received was an admonition to return to my ministry with more urgency, more consecration, more focus on the Savior, more faith in His word."

First up, a miracle: Rhonda decided she's going to be baptized and confirmed! She's clicked so well with the members here in the Miami Ward and is especially tight with a new convert who recently went through the temple for the first time. We felt inspired to study the doctrine of Christ in 2 Nephi 31 and had her read verse 13:

"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel."

After reading the verse herself, Rhonda told us she "really felt that one" and that she was definitely feeling that "baptism of fire". She then declared she thought the Book of Mormon really was a continuation of God's teachings in the Bible, and it came to us to ask her, "Why would we invite you to be baptized and confirmed again if the Book of Mormon is true?" She thought for a moment and responded, "...Because this is the true church of Jesus Christ! Because this church has authority!"

Bingo!

~

In other news...

Our other friend Zeke is going to pray and talk with his family about being baptized on two Sundays from now, the 22nd!

Father's Day is coming up! Make sure to tell your dad you love him. Dads need love too!

We both spoke in church on Sunday! Probably the last time I'll get to do that as a missionary. Weird. Lots of lasts lately.

We had dinner with Marvin again later that evening and he fed us some real good steaks again. I tried to make a joke and asked him how long he thinks it'd take him to eat a whole cow, and he thought for a moment and said, "Well, usually about seven months for a calf with my wife and two kids." ...Forgot people 100% actually do that out here. Farmers are so hardcore.

Song of the week: "Rolling On" by the Murlocs. Definitely put this one in an email before but it's been stuck in my head all week.

Love y'all! To all my other missionaries and everybody else enduring to the end, finish strong!

Week 79 - Andersen, Missouri

 Happy New Year!

 Hope you've all had a great Christmas and New Year's Eve. Elder Perry and I are loving Anderson and I have to say this transfer has been one of the high points of my mission so far. I've definitely had some struggles, but I love my companion, I love this area, I love the members here, and I love our friends we teach. Coming from a big college town like Fayetteville, I really didn't expect to like this little ward in the country but this month has been a good time.

 Me write two week worth of thing and use lot word. If you want skim then hope πŸ™‚ do trick.

~

🏝️<-🏊‍♂️🍩
 We got seven whole boxes of at least ten bags of Hostess mini donuts each from our Bishop and gave four boxes of them out at the town of Noel's Christmas parade. While doing so we met an awesome Hawaiian family who have family members in the Church on the island–and the family came to church the next morning and loved it!

πŸ”+🦢
 Remember that Thai family in the middle of nowhere who let us use their bathroom and invited us to their son's birthday party? Well, the big day finally arrived. We walked in all loaded jp with the remaining three boxes' worth of mini-donuts as a birthday gift only to find that the first event of the party was actually an hour-long sermon from an English preacher with a slideshow in Spanish and another guy translating into Karen (Kuh-ren, not care-n) and we were just flabbergasted. Honestly, it took everything Elder Perry and I had to not just bust up laughing at the bizarreness of the situation we'd just managed to get ourselves in. It was just so unreal.

 Well, after half an hour of listening to some kinda funky doctrine about sin and cleansing with the rest of the party goers, we got up to leave early, but the pastor conveniently finished his sermon like thirty seconds after we did and everyone gathered around for food. Anyways, upon dishing myself up some rice noodles and mystery soup, however, I discovered that the only solid in the broth was–you guessed it–chicken feet. Yum.

 My courage faltered for a moment, but then I realized I'd quite possibly never be offered chicken foot soup again for the rest of my life and I turned around to grab me some digits. Worth it for the flex, but man, that was one of the most surreal experiences of my whole mission overall. Thai birthday party sermon with chicken foot soup in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Man.

πŸ†
 Shoutout to Brother and Sister Horrocks for feeding us and buying us water bottles every week. They are so chill and so supportive of all the missionaries, especially because their son is serving a mission in the Arizona/Nevada area right now. Every visit to their home is so rejuvenating haha. Missionary spa for real

🍺πŸ₯΄πŸ·
 One of our new converts who got baptized like a month and a half ago offered us a beer when we visited him this week πŸ€¦‍♂️ and when we reminded him we don't drink beer in the Church he offered us wine instead πŸ€¦‍♂️🀦‍♂️🀦‍♂️

🍞+πŸš—
 I got to see my friends Clayton and Brilynn last Sunday!! They came to visit family near Bentonville and just *happened* to be in one of just two congregations that meet in Anderson out of the twenty or so that meet in the Bentonville-Rogers area. Tender mercy for real. The Bredensteiner-Bentz family has a stacked roster, let me tell ya. They're so awesome. Seeing them on my mission was so fun and soooooooo weird at the same time

πŸŽ…+🌯
 A church member invited us to their Christmas family reunion dinner and I got to see my friend Madi from Fayetteville again! It was so fun catching up with her. Plus, I also got to say hi to my other good friend Byron over the phone after she was cool enough to FaceTime him. You're cool for that, Madi. Plus, we totally robbed them blind at their white elephant gift exchange. Elder Perry got a dancing cactus and a desktop waterfall and I got an official UofA Razorbacks-themed cutting board. Big wins ✌️

πŸŽ…+🀸‍♂️
 Our mission leaders, the Hathaways, hosted a huge Christmas devotional with the fifty or so missionaries in the Bentonville and Rogers stakes and we had a huge game day led by President right after for like three hours. It was pretty sweet.

πŸ’‡‍♂️=πŸ‘©‍🦲
 Mowed my own hair for the first time in my whole life today. I mean cut. Both words apply when your hair's as thick as it runs in my family.

πŸ•΄πŸΎπŸ”€
 Had exchanges again and I went with my old companion Elder Handley! We saw some good success and saw an awesome miracle where we prayed for an exact spot to start knocking doors at and got led to this random country road outside of town with a few houses. It didn't look like the best spot to knock at logically, but we decided to trust God's guidance and like thirty seconds after getting out of the car we found a phone on the ground with an incoming call. We picked it

🫘+🚭
Got offered a blunt for the first time in my life from our bro Armando who used to work for the cartel before he ruptured both his kidneys. We said nah for the record. No zaza for the missionaries

🌊
Our friend Jenny was baptized! She's best friends with a an awesome member of the ward here and we can tell she's gonna go far.

~

Song of the week: "Christmas Time Is Here" by Vince Guaraldi Trio

A missionary I served with made a social media page called @called_to_serve_again and it's all about helping missionaries who finished their missions early connect with one another and build a community together. I thought it was a cool idea so here's a lil' plug. Check it out if it sounds interesting!

My freshman year biology professor gave a BYU devotional! https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/jamie-jensen/faith-science-symbiotic-pathways-truth/

Scripture of the week: 1 Corinthians 9:13-14

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? / Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Love, Elder Rigby

Whoops totally forgot to finish typing up one of our stories from last week.

So, about that exchange with Elder Handley...

"We picked up that phone we found and answered the call to find out the lady on the other line only spoke Spanish. She handed it over to her English-speaking friend and we ended up meeting him just down the street to give the phone back. Funny enough, this guy didn't even live here but he had family members who were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he used to go with them whenever he'd visit! He said he wasn't a very churchy guy, but thst our timing was a little too good. He thought it was almost like it was a miracle or something...

Heh heh. Now we're cooking."

¡Feliz nuevo aΓ±o!

Week 78 - Andersen, Missouri

Merry Christmas :)

Song of the week: Not the Only One

Doctrine and Covenants 123:12-13, 17

 For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it—

 Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven—

 These should then be attended to with great earnestness.

...

 Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

What a blessing it is to serve a mission for the Lord this Christmas.

Week 54 - Pierce City, Missouri

 "Dang, I didn't know Mormons were actually cool."

- guy we found last week

~

Hey all!

This week was a lot better. Thanks for the prayers as always! They work.

 Things are looking up in our area right now as we've found a bunch of cool new friends, taught some good lessons, and reaffirmed another friend's baptismal date for the 20th! Elder Handley really is an awesome companion to have. We have very complimentary skills, so we build up and strengthen each other's weaknesses well.

 The Fourth of July was pretty sweet here! Let me tell ya, they go all out in the boonies on the Fourth. We heard fireworks every night for at least five days. On Independence Day itself we had an awesome dinner with some elderly members deep in the boonies and they showed us their equatorial guineas (weird dino chickens,) beehives, and soon-to-be-occupied bat cages in exchange for us pouring some diesel into their tractor for them. After that, we headed into town and wandered the streets looking for people lighting off mortars in their yard so we could invite them to come to a church tour.

 We saw too many miracles to count this week, but one theme I saw throughout is that we always just happened to be show up at exactly the right time that our friends were best prepared to receive the Savior's message. I'll recap a few really quick:

♤ We felt prompted to go stand in line at a food truck at a community concert even though we weren't hungry and the family in front of us happened to be members who bought us food and the family behind us happened to be super good friends with some other members we know in Pierce City! What's more, the next day one of the senior missionaries told us to go visit a lady at this antique shop (that happened to be 500 feet away when he called) and she turned out to be the mom of the same family we met at the food truck the night before! Promptings from the Spirit are funny like that.

♡ The Spirit told us to knock some of our current friends' houses even though we knew they probably weren't home and their adult son answered. We talked for a bit and he ended up coming to our chapel tour that same day, then came to church with his mom on Sunday, and now he's praying about baptism!

♧ A dude just randomly showed up to church last week and we totally missed him because there were a bunch of unfamiliar faces due to both a baby blessing happening and a returned missionary giving a talk in Sacrament Meeting. A member noticed him just chilling there though, so we were ready this week. He's a recovering addict who's almost done with rehab and looking to strengthen his faith and His grandpa's RLDS so he figured he'd try the Book of Mormon. There's no RLDS churches for at least an hour, though, so he decided to just come to ours πŸ’ͺ

Thought: Mormon 5:17-18

 "They were once a delightsome people, and they had Christ for their shepherd; yea, they were led even by God the Father.

 "But now, behold, they are led about by Satan, even as chaff is driven before the wind, or as a vessel is tossed about upon the waves, without sail or anchor, or without anything wherewith to steer her; and even as she is, so are they."

These verses may be a little gloomy, but Mormon (the guy the Book of Mormon is named after) uses a powerful analogy here to illustrate the invaluable blessings that come simply from following the Good Shepherd.

Elder Dale G. Renlund expounds upon Mormon's analogy of the sailing vessel in his BYU Speech "Constructing Spiritual Stability:"

"Without Christ, we are driven like a vessel tossed about upon the waves. We have no power because we have no sail. We have no stability, especially in times of storm, because we have no anchor. We have no direction or purpose because we don’t have anything with which to steer."

When we faithfully and prayerfully give Him our heartfelt all, Jesus Christ will bless us with power, stability, direction, and purpose. He is our shepherd and our captain! Do everything you can put yourself in a place where you can hear His voice, then listen to Him and do as He says. He will guide you through troubled waters.

Elder Rigby

Week 53: We're all mad here - Pierce City, Missouri

Happy Independence Day!

Phew, long week. I'll probably keep my email shorter this time around.

Note: the above statement is false.

♤ Our new mission leaders are way cool and wasted no time jumping right into the action. President Hathaway and his whole family were all in a freak accident where two separate stray tires totaled both of their cars on the way to the mission field, and, miraculously, no one was injured besides some minor injuries to President Hathaway. In almost every other stray tire collision there is an extremely high fatality rate. Miracles right off the bat, huh? These guys are the real deal.

◇ Went on exchange to Stockton, Missouri, met a few polygamists living on "the ranch." The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds that marriage between one man and one woman is ordained of God (Jacob 2:23-30,) so that was pretty wild to me. As soon as we crossed the boundary into their community the Spirit felt way weird and the vibes were not good, but hey, at least they gave us free ice cream. πŸ€·‍♂️

♧ After wrapping up our exchange with the Stockton Elders, we pulled up to Trek and pulled handcarts with the youth for a few hours! This was my first time at Trek and it was pretty sweet to be a pioneer for a day πŸ€

♡ MLC again! It's always fun, but this time around was extra special seeing as how it was the Hathaways' first leadership council. President and Sister Hathaway are miracle-minded spiritual giants with strong family bonds and the kind of attitude that makes me feel like they're my new surrogate parents. I'd sustain them no matter what, but after that meeting yesterday, they have my trust too.

~

Song of the week: "Master, the Tempest is Raging" from the 2023 Church Music Festival. Way good.

Friends to pray for (please:)
- Norma and her family
- Tilor and his family
- The missionaries of the Monett Zone!

Thought: The Gift of Remembrance

Doctrine and Covenants 6:22-23:

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, if you desire a further witness, cast your mind upon the night that you cried unto me in your heart, that you might know concerning the truth of these things.

"Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?"

 Simply put, I was in the feels two days ago. You've got better things to do than read about my problems so all I'll say is that the whole week felt like one long string of "just one of those days." You get the idea.

 Upon praying and asking my Father in Heaven for something, anything, I received a clear prompting to open my journal to an entry from exactly one year ago. I won't share everything I read, but one line stuck out to me in particular:

"...When I truly listen to the Spirit, I know that God has seen down these roads with perfect clarity and that He would have me serve his people right where He called me."

 The gift of remembrance is precious. We all have times in our life when we do not feel the Holy Spirit. Knowing that, our Savior offers us this gift so that we may hold to our past experiences with Him as to a life preserver in deep water.

Here are some ways to magnify it:

- Journaling
- Expressing gratitude vocally
- Learning from past mistakes
- Testifying of personal converting experiences

 Jesus Christ lives! His Church is alive and well. I invite you to magnify the gift of remembrance by making good habits of these four actions. I promise from personal experience that as you faithfully magnify this gift from God, you will always have a reservoir of His living water to see you through the spiritual droughts of life.

Elder Rigby

Week 46 - Monett, Missouri

Hey all!

Week two in Monett! It's been an adjustment for sure, but God has so much in store for this little town. He's taught me a ton already through my experiences with Elder Fairchild and the good people of southwest Missouri.

I hadn't realized it before, but I think I got kinda Cookie Monster about missionary work at some point. "Me want find new people NOW! Me want convert baptism NOW!" type deal. To that end, Elder Fairchild's been an awesome example of patience for me. Sometimes, being a successful missionary means being active in our waiting.

Doctrine and Covenants 123:17:

"Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed."

~

Cool stuff this week:

- Mother's Day! I love you, Mom. Thanks to all the other "moms" in my life who have been there for me too. You're awesome.

-  Me and three other Elders in my district got asked to sing "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy" in an a capella quartet for zone conference this Friday! Wish us luck.

- Met a bunch of cool people from Burma/Myanmar that all moved to Monett for work. One guy we talked to actually messaged a bunch with some Karen-speaking missionaries in Minnesota over Facebook, so he might pull up to church this Sunday!

- a member family's dog followed us around this neighborhood we tracted and we found a lady while the members' dog peed on her porch. MPL?

Alma 26:3

Thought: "How Can I Keep From Singing?"

I know I said I wasn't gonna do a song of the week anymore, but man, I just love music so much. I'll make it a hymn/Christian song from now on though.

Anyways, I had a million different plans all going for what I could write about for this week's thought, but when I thought back to this song I felt prompted that this was what I needed to share. Honestly, I've only heard "How Can I Keep From Singing" once, but man, Isaiah 12:2/2 Nephi 22:2 deserves a callback for this one. The minute it came on the Church radio station, I knew this song was a message from my Heavenly Father of how much He truly cares. And, when we express our gratitude like this song does, we show God how much we care about Him too.

I don't have a recording, but look it up if you can! I promise it'll brighten your spirits like it did mine.

~

"My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth's lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation;
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it,
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?"

Week 33: Air - Fort Smith, Arkansas

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Fine I'll start writing it Tuesday night

~

Hey all!

Happy Valentine's Day(?)

This week's been a good one. Elder Keller's an awesome companion and he's taught me a ton already. We've seen an abundance of tender mercies, all of which can be summarized into one line I've said at least ten times in the last few days:

"Dang. The Church is true."

~

So here's some stuff we did!

- Found a ton of new people to teach by tracting πŸ€œπŸ˜

- Put a few friends on date for baptism! Pray for Melanie, Nathan, Keshawn, and Alicia, please!

- Got stood up at a lesson with some teenagers at the park so we went basketball contacting and hooped for a little with some Hispanic dudes. They didn't want to come to church though πŸ˜”

- Gave a blessing to a guy in the hospital who isn't part of the Church, but specifically asked for us after he was healed by the last blessing he got from missionaries (see James 5:14-15.)

- Tried matΓ© a couple of weeks ago. Overrated imo.

- Our young Marshallese friend Neinei got baptized on Thursday! She and her family are awesome. They even gave Elder Bigelow this cool Marshallese necklace/bolo tie made out of dried coconut leaves and seashells. We taught Neinei's older sister Melanie tonight too and she's awesome.

- Went with our district to these indoor batting cages owned by an inactive member who loves missionaries. He let us play for free for hours and even ordered us all pizza. P-day MVP.

~

Fort Smith is the American Frontier's Gotham City. It's huge, gloomy, and absolutely ripe for some Gospel harvesting. What makes it extra real is the frontier legends like the original Lone Ranger (Bass Reeves) and the Hanging Judge (Charles Parker) lived here, and they even based all the True Grit movies in this here town. John Wayne starred in a Western about my mission area.

Thought: 2 Nephi 22:2 / Isaiah 12:2

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also has become my salvation."

Friday night ended with the departing testimonies of missionaries finishing their 18-24 months of service here, and this time around, the testimony of one Sister I'd served around named Sister Lebaron hit me especially hard. I didn't know her super well besides an ill-fated Christmas activity we ran at the Bentonville square, but what struck me was how she decided to listen to the Spirit and drop everything she planned to say for a simple thought on this scripture. I'll paraphrase as best as I can:

"My favorite name for Jesus Christ is 'my song.' When we sing, our lungs fill with air and that air becomes our song. When anxiety sets in and I feel like I'm drowning, I sing, and Christ is my air."

Every time the Atonement of Jesus Christ is illustrated as a source of relief, I feel the Spirit. Water in the desert, light in the darkness, air when we're drowning. Jesus Christ knows us intimately and feels our sorrows in a singularly, inimitably, utterly perfect way. He felt our pain for us because He loves us. This is one of the greatest truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

~

I love you all! The Church is true. Hope you have a great week, and thanks for reading my emails.

Week 26: Sushi Haus - Bentonville, Arkansas

 Das Sushi war großartig.

Well, Christmas has come and gone and it was...different. I was a little lonely being away from my family for the holidays for the first time in my life, but at the same time, this Christmas has been the most Christ-centered Christmas in my life, and knowing that makes the sacrifice worth it this year.

I'm low on time yet again so this one won't be as polished, but I haven't written much about the random stuff that happens to us Arkansas missionaries lately, so I might just dump some bullet points from my phone journal and get back to packing.

Speaking of packing...transfer calls came in this morning! Sure enough, I'm not long for Bentonville, y'all.

I don't know how to build up suspense on an email without way too much fluffy writing so I'll just cut to the chase:

Bentonville First Ward, District Leader. Companion: Elder Kemp

                                     I
                                    V

Fort Smith First Ward, Zone Leader.
Companion: Elder Bigelow

But that's not all, folks. The Fort Smith First Ward also covers a young single adult congregation and the two areas are shared jointly between we Elders and the Fort Smith STLs (sister missionaries in leadership roles.) In addition, the other Zone Leader isn't even in my companionship; he's over the Spanish congregation with a trainee to boot.

In short, I'll be in a new area with a new companion doing a new kind of missionary work in a new leadership role in the downtown of both the biggest and southernmost city in our mission's part of Arkansas.

Those Legos I got for Christmas are going to work wonders as stress relief.

~

Jokes aside, I'm grateful God has trusted me with this increased responsibility and I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow from this time. Plus, I've already met my new companion, Elder Bigelow, before, and he seemed pretty cool. I was roommates with his last companion for a bit, and man, I love that guy. And the other Zone Leader in Fort Smith, Elder Smythe, is known throughout the mission for being faithful, genuine, and extremely hardworking. I'm going to learn a whole lot from them in the coming months.

Stuff from the last two weeks:

Taco Bell Doordash fiasco and the triumphant return of the Double-Decker Taco

Elder Kemp tracting in the rain on crutches (see Google Photos)

Actually productive morning: woke up and ran around the block, showered and got ready, played piano for 20 minutes, opened my Lego advent calendar, made some breakfast, planned District Council, and did some personal study with my new PMG manual πŸ‘¨‍🎀

Gave out free hot cocoa at the Bentonville Square with some ward members

I have like a year's worth of candy

Ate five tostadas at the Juarezes. Worth

Remember Jim, the hotel mogul living in Spain who referred himself after he singlehandedly taught himself 90% of the key doctrines of the Church? Well, he immediately got hit by a drunk driver driving from the airport to his new house the night he got here. No joke. He's alive and should recover, but Satan knew he couldn't shake this guy so he just sent a straight-up hitman to take him out. Naturally, his baptism had to get delayed, but he'll get there eventually.

"If you wanna make God laugh, tell him your plan."

~~~~~~~~~
Dad got hit and run by a car immediately after he and our dog Charlie got stalked by a coyote through a farm field. Once again, no joke. Very fortunately, they got off much easier than Jim and neither of them were injured when at least one of them probably should have been seriously injured or killed. I'm not really sure how to process that one so I'll just leave it as is.
Joined a game at the Bentonville Library chess club to try and strike up a conversation but unfortunately, I got absolutely smoked. No Book of Mormons were handed out in the five minutes before I was checkmated, unfortunately.
Found an Action Bible in a thrift store. The Old Testament makes a great comic book story.
OndrΓ©: Driving to a random building in an apartment complex with no objective led to us getting a second chance with a guy we had shied away from trying to teach the first time we met him. 100% actual miracle in my book. God is a God of second chances.
Someone sent me Studio Ghibli legos AHHHHHH (update: it was my parents. They are awesome)
Talked to a guy we used to teach and he taught us the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath. Good to know.
I wanna build a missionary tree fort in the woods on pday if I'm ever transferred to the boonies. I'll leave my mark on this mission somehow.
Baked a ton of cookies on Christmas Eve. First batch was meh, second batch was πŸ˜»
"My dear brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives." - Russell M. Nelson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Cronins' Christmas family tradition: singing at least one verse of all the Christmas hymns in the hymnbook. It made me happy.
T-bone steak, Christmas hymns, and surprise presents at the Cronins' for Christmas Eve dinner. They bought us UofA merch and cool new ties cause they're awesome. These are the same folks who baked me a birthday cake too.
Christmas morning call with my family was nice.
Christmas dinner with the whole Bayles family. Equally awesome as the Cronins.
First snow on my mission 12/27/23
Lotsa piano practice on pday
Got sushi with the Bentonville STLs and two of their recent converts at Sushi House earlier tonight. Check it out if you're ever in Bentonville. It was so good that I bought a Sushi House t-shirt.
Song of the week: Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson. It's a good rainy day song.
I wish it wasn't 11:09pm so I could actually take some time to write a fully developed spiritual thought, but it is. By the way, if anyone has advice for time management, specifically procrastination, it would be very much appreciated. I kinda need some help with that.
Either way, I don't want to send out an email about being a missionary without trying to use this letter as a missionary opportunity, so as for a thought, I would hearken back to the fact that every time I read the Book of Mormon and learn more about the life and teachings of my Savior, Jesus Christ, and His servants, I feel better.
Christmas morning was great this year, but the foreboding no-man's-land of Christmas afternoon after visiting with the other missionaries at lunch and before going to the Bayleses for dinner had me pretty down in the dumps. I hadn't put on the armor of God (i.e. hadn't read the scriptures; see Ephesians 6:11-17) and I could acutely feel my spiritual vulnerability. So, after District Council ended and the rest of the missionaries left, I asked my companion if we could do a quick companion study. He said yes, and we read Alma chapter 34, where Amulek teaches of the eternal plan of salvation through repentance and faith on the Savior. My testimony today is that doing so made me feel better. I felt closer to God and strengthened in my weakness, and I knew that somewhere inside me, a hole that I hadn't noticed until that moment had been filled in with the love of God.
If you'd like to read or listen to the chapter we read, here's a link:
