Week 87 - Miami, Oklahama

Long email again.  Important stuff's in red.

Hey all!

Back in the saddle again. Oklahoma's a pretty wild place, that's for sure. Kinda reminds me of Fort Smith, AR, where I served last winter. Basically that means it's the cowboy hood. Plus we have a lot of Native American tribes here so that's sick.

In other news, my friend Alex who we found knocking doors in Anderson two weeks ago is on date for baptism in March! He really is just the kind of person we missionaries look and look for. Please keep praying for him! They're working so far πŸ˜

πŸ§‘πŸΎ‍πŸ’ΌπŸ’¬πŸ”₯🀯
Elder Ahmad Corbitt, a global Church leader in the Quorum of the Seventy, came to Joplin, Missouri for our semi-annual stake conference! It was so so so awesome. I took like ten pages of notes on the little spiral-bound notepad that now serves as my "phone" haha. I could go on and on about it, but I'll try to summarize the overarching theme of his messages.

The Book of Mormon teaches a unique lesson about faith in Jesus Christ: if we desire the faith of the prophets, we must "Look forward with the eye of faith and see the Lord's promise fulfilled." The Lord cannot lie. Therefore, if He says something will happen, it can be effectively treated as if it has already happened. One awesome example lies in the prophet Abinadi's teachings of Christ and His atoning sacrifice:

And now if Christ had not come into the world, speaking of things to come as though they had already come, there could have been no redemption.

And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.

He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.

...Boy, do I love this book.

Anyways, Abinadi looked forward to the resurrection of Christ and knew that, despite it being over a century beforehand, the battle was already won. He consciously chose to live in ~148 B.C. as if Christ's suffering and victory had already occured, because he was utterly confident in the Lord's promise.

Let's apply this to some situations in our day: How would you act if the Second Coming of Christ had already happened? I know I would probably be a lot more bold in sharing my testimony of the Savior and zealous in following His every word. Wouldn't you? In that case, if the Lord's always good on His word then why not act that way now? You see, it may not have happened yet, but the when simply doesn't matter. It will happen, and that's the truth.

Here's another: One of my greatest life goals is to build a loving family of my own, rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. An impression that came to me as I listened to Elder Corbitt teach was, "How might I act differently in this meeting if my future family were sitting next to me right now?" When I look forward with the eye of faith, I know that someday, I will be a part of this family. Do my actions now matter any less than my actions at that future point in determining the kind of husband and father I am to them? Not on the Lord's timetable.

I'm out of time and out of room, so I'll leave a lil' bibliography here for anyone who wants to do their personal study on looking forward on the Lord's promises with the eye of faith. Here's some scriptural examples Elder Corbitt shared with us:

Alma 5:15
Alma 33:19-20
Moroni 7:40-41
Alma 26:27
(PoGP) Moses 7:40-41
Mosiah 7:44-45, 47
Ether 3:12
Ether 12:19
Mosiah 16:6
Jarom 1:11
1 Nephi 2:20
1 Nephi 5:5
2 Nephi 25:24-25
(D&C) Doctrine and Covenants 111:11
(NT) Revelation 12:7-11
Alma 32:30-41

Jesus Christ is real. He did what He said He did and He is Who He says He is. And, His Church is alive right now. Aren't we lucky?

Elder Rigby

Week 44 - Fort Smith, Arkansas

 Hey all!

Sorry for no email last week! I'll be better at knocking them out sooner from here on out.

I'm just getting back from a two-day trip from Bentonville for exchanges with the Assistants to the President (APs) and then an all-day leadership council meeting. Sounds kinda boring if you're not a missionary but I promise it was a great time. We also find out transfer news tomorrow so I'll update this when we find out.

*Update: I'll be heading to the Monett Zone, Monette Ward in Missouri with Elder Fairchild! Also, shoutout to my trainer Elder Ceb for being the new AP!

Monett is the smallest zone in the whole mission population-wise with under 150,000 people spread across eight areas compared to 102,000 people in my last area alone, so this is gonna be a big change for me. I know it's God's will that I serve there, though, and I have faith that there are some amazing people waiting for the Gospel in Monett. I choose to make this the best area of my mission.

~

Stuff I did this week:

- Drove a brand spankin' new (nine miles on the odometer) 2024 Nissan Rogue a hundred miles through the boonies between Bentonville and Fort Smith and both of our phones died on the way πŸ’€

- Highlights from my exchange with Elder Shields: met a Ukrainian CSGO player who wanted to come to church and a Muslim dude I taught at a park in Bentonville six months ago, taught the absolute craziest lesson that I 100% cannot write about here, and met a Pohnpeian girl who wants to get baptized and just happens to be cousins with a boy we baptized in Bentonville! Fun stuff.

- MLC! Big focuses of this month's mission leadership conference were promising blessings after every invitation we give and improving our council times. We set a new mission record for baptisms this month and set a goal of 100 baptisms in June (WOOOOOO LET'S GO ABM) to send off President and Sister Collins and welcome in President and Sister Hathaway.

- Hung out by the storm shelter for half an hour after a tornado touched down twenty miles south of Fort Smith a few nights ago. Not sure why people live where a giant whirlwind can just pop out of nowhere and launch them to Alberda,  but whatever.

- Said goodbye to a few members I'm tight with here ;/. The last people I talked to tonight were some of the Deacons (11-13 y/o boys) who I'd passed the Sacrament with for the last four months and who are like my . One of them, Grant, looked me in the eyes and said "You are a good missionary." It made my day.

~

Thought:

I spent at least an hour today trying to come up with a good way to summarize this BYU Devotional I loved called "The Inconvenient Messiah," but nothing I wrote felt quite right. After saying a prayer about it, this is what I came up with:

1 Kings 17:8-24: The Widow of Zerephath

Consider the true weight of a blessing promised by a prophet of God.

What blessings were the widow promised?

How did she have to exercise faith in order to receive these promised blessings?

This video impacted me when I watched it this week. I'd recommend starting from Elijah and the widow's conversation about halfway through:

As a representative of Jesus Christ, I have the privilege of being able to promise blessings in His name. I promise you that you will never regret following Jesus Christ. No matter the decision, I promise that you will always be glad you chose Him.

Week 43 - Fort Smith, Arkansas

 4.24.24

(Here's last week's email. Sorry it's late! I'll send this week's email later today.)

Hey all!

Hope everyone's having a good week. We were super busy today and I'm low on time, so I'll keep it short and sweet.

~

Fun stuff this week:

- talked with a Vietnamese lady for like five minutes through Google Translate and she was cool. We didn't have a Book of Mormon in TiαΊΏng Việt, but we'll swing by again when we track one down for her.

- traded friends with the Spanish Elders. They introduced us to an English-speaking dude named Keonte and we introduced them to a Spanish-speaking lady named Guadalupe and both of them accepted a date for baptism right on the doorstep! The Fort Smith Zone is doing awesome right now and the number of friends we have who are planning to be baptized has doubled in the last week.

- the Elders from Mena, AR came up for the day and we obliterated some potatoes with a sling handmade by Elder McKee (see Google Photos.)

- went to the Fort Smith Historical Museum and nerded out over WWII paraphernalia and other old stuff for two and a half hours.

- ran into a bulletin board while playing games at the church today and somehow ended up with a thumbtack in my arm. I didn't notice for a full minute until one of the sister missionaries saw it and freaked out, so that was fun.

~

Thought: Matthew 5:6

Full transparency, these last two weeks were really hard. I've been fighting some demons that caught me off-guard and it hasn't been a smooth ride. However, fighting my battles alongside Christ has given me plenty of opportunities to ponder what I really desire from the life I've been blessed with.

A lot of things I'd been pondering clicked together when I read this verse from Christ's Sermon on the Mount:

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."

When we're hungry, we don't have food, when we're thirsty, we don't have water, and, when we hunger and thirst for righteousness, well, we don't have righteousness.

Christ is looking for those who are hungry for virtue. He's not asking if you already have it, He's asking how badly you want it.

"They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Luke 5:31-32)

How badly do you want it?

Week 42 - Fort Smith, Arkansas

 4.17.24 9:30pm

Just fried up a ham sandwich and filled my beer stein with orange juice. It's email time, baby.

Hey all!

Lots of miracles this week. We've had a few new friends join us in church and they're totally awesome. Our other friends are doing great too and one of them has her baptism this weekend! More about her:

~

This friend epitomizes "the elect of God." She is incredibly humble and has had the absolute craziest, most difficult life of just about anyone I've ever met, and yet she laughs in the Devil's face with ruthless optimism. I'll spare you the details, but the fact that she's still as indomitably cheerful as she is is a miracle all by itself.

This friend keeps commitments perfectly. When we met her, we only talked for a few minutes before leaving her with a Book of Mormon, seeing as how there was a five-squad-car drug bust (plus a SWAT team later, apparently) happening about twenty feet from us across the motel. Despite having impaired vision, impaired hearing, and utterly impoverished living conditions, she has watched listened to the entire Book of Mormon twice by now and has come to church every single week since we've met her in early March, and consistently amazes us with her Christlike charity to others despite her life being so incredibly hard.

One example of that last point: during her baptismal interview with at Sonic (unorthodox choice of location, I know) a random guy walked up to us smack in the middle of her interview and announced that the Spirit had put it upon him to sing us a Christian country song, so after he asked nicely, we told him we were happy to hear it (and it actually wasn't bad.) Once he finished, he thanked us and began to walk away, but he wasn't leaving without a Gospel message on this friend's watch. She called him back over, told us to give him a Book of Mormon, and invited him to church and to her baptism. He happily said yes to all three and joined her in church the next morning.

Thanks to this friend, our new buddy from Sonic, who turns out to be a total Bible wizard, dove head-first into the Book of Mormon and loves it so much he asked us to start meeting with both him and his wife this Friday.

We learn something absolutely wild about her life every single time we meet, but one thing is consistent: God has been preparing this lady for a long, long time.

~

Well, that took most of the time I have tonight, but here's a few other fun things we did this week just for variety:

- gave a Book of Mormon to a lady who told us she felt the Spirit when she said a prayer that she'd get a super rare PokΓ©mon card and then immediately pulled it from the next pack she opened. I don't know how much it was worth, but she showed me her collection and I recognized another card in her binder that sells for $700 πŸ˜³

- got Bible-bashed by this crazy guy who I was thought was going to rob us but instead of the butterfly knife I was 100% convinced he had in his pocket, he just pulled out some car keys. Our conversation with him was so goofy though that it would be hilarious if I hadn't thought I was gonna get stabbed.

- went on a frog hunt crusade with Elder Ashcraft (see Google Photos πŸΈ)

- a dude from the church across the street bought me ice cream at Chick-Fil-A when I didn't bring enough cash. Thanks, church neighbor dude.

~

Thought:

I couldn't decide which of these three messages I wanted to write about, so I decided to just throw them all in and let the Spirit guide you to whichever you needed to hear most. Happy hunting!

1) Believing Christ: A Practical Approach to the Atonement by Stephen E. Robinson

We may believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, but do we believe Him when He says He can save us?

-

2) Let Every Man Learn His Duty by Joseph B. Wirthlin

To paraphrase: "If you can't work your bank account, baptize the banker. If you can't find good groceries, baptize the grocer."

-

3) “Be Still, and Know That I Am God” by David A. Bednar

"Every Sunday, if we will, we can be still and know that God is our Heavenly Father, we are His children, and Jesus Christ is our Savior."

~

The Church is true! This stuff is the real deal. It may sound far-fetched, but take it from me: I would not last a month out here without the constant guiding, healing, directing, and strengthening power of my Savior, Jesus Christ. One way or another, every single good thing in my life leads right back to Him.

Week 41: 🌚🀝🌝 - Fort Smith, Arkansas

 Hey all!

I think my creative peak is sometime around 10:15pm, but man, I gotta go to bed on time.

This week's been kind of all over the place, but life's good. Here's a few highlights:

Conference in Mountainburg:

General Conference was powerful. Some themes I picked up on were the power of prayer, integrity and trust, and finding inner confidence through our covenants with Christ. For the Saturday night session, we got a ride thirty miles north to Mountainburg, AR, where one of the sister missionaries in my area just happens to have close relatives. Her inactive cousin just happened to move here right before she got transferred to serve right in his local branch, so after that little miracle he decided it was time to give church another shot. We tagged along with the Sisters to get to know him better and it turns out we have a ton in common, so it was awesome getting to nerd out about video games with a guy my age and call it missionary work.

Apocalypse:

"A [total solar eclipse?] At this time of year? In this part of the country? Localized entirely in your [teaching area?]"

"...Yes."

"...May I see it?"

- The Simpsons

Youth Night part II:

We had three friends pull up to youth night tonight, so we played frisbee for an hour and a half with the young men and ended up putting Chris and Josh on date! They've been praying about it and both of them had dreams about baptism last week so they decided they wanted to be baptized on May 11th! These dudes are awesome.

Temple trip:

Definitely the place to be after half of the living Apostles of Jesus Christ focus their Conference messages on the blessings of worshipping in the House of the Lord. Takeaways from today's trip included:

1) (desire to change • faith in Christ's healing power) = Repentance

 2) Hebrews chapter 11 is cool.

Thought: "Opposition in All Things" by Elder Matthias Held

"If you could have one wish granted, what would it be?"

Elder Keller asked us that as a joke a few days ago, but seeing as how my brain's starved for philosophy, I've been chewing on it for a little. Barring blessings that naturally come from the Gospel (salvation, family, happiness, world peace, seeing Christ in-person, etc.) I think I would ask for perfect discipline.

If I just asked to instantly be super rich or to be a crazy good musician, it would be fun for like five minutes and then immediately lose all flavor. What makes growing talents and accomplishing goals satisfying is the struggle required to realize them.

Elder Held talked all about opposition in his General Conference message a few days ago, and I especially loved his emphasis on our ability to see opposition and choose how to react to it.

There is opposition in all things, but that same opposition is what gives life depth. Therefore, the fact that doing hard things is hard must inherently be a good thing. If that's true, then what we need in order to maximize our success in life, both spiritual and temporal, is to get really good at doing hard things.

So, next up for me on the road to being a Christian disciple-scholar-brother-musician-athlete missionary machine is prayerfully striving for self-mastery, or the ability to do hard stuff.

Doctrine and Covenants 121:7-8
"My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes."

Week 40: The Manor - Fort Smith, Arkansas

 Hey all!

Status report - we're hanging in there. Life ain't always pretty but miracles are everywhere. Once again, the Gospel of Jesus Christ works.

~

Stuff from this week:

- After a Spirit-filled Book of Mormon read of Mosiah 2, our friend Juan decided he wanted to be baptized on May the 4th!

- Chris and Josh, two teenagers we just started teaching, are totally awesome. They're super cheerful and friendly and loved church, and we even got to play dodgeball with them at a youth activity at the church last night. I should probably mention they're also both powerlifters. Chris is fifteen and benches 350.

- The same guy works at the self-checkout at Walmart almost every time we go shopping on P-day, so he's our buddy now. Keith's a nice dude. Be like Keith.

- Our friend Michelle was going to come to family history class again but she got attacked by a cat so our ward members who picked her up just drove her to the hospital for rabies shots instead. Good call.

- Chase's baptism and confirmation were a success! Thirteen other med students (nine of them already in our ward) came to his baptism, so we had a whole hospital there.

- STAR WARS PINBALL at the bowling alley last P-day. I LOVE pinball. I think I might have spent more time playing it than I did bowling.

- a few areas in our zone are going to be in the totality zone of next Monday's solar eclipse, so President and Sister Collins made the entire mission solar-eclipse-themed pass-along cards. They're pretty legendary.

- My sister Hazel turned seventeen! You're awesome, Hazel.

~

Thought: “The Book of Mormon is like a vast mansion with gardens, towers, courtyards, and wings. All the rooms in this mansion need to be explored, whether by valued traditional scholars or by those at the cutting edge." - Neal A. Maxwell

I absolutely love the imagery of Elder Maxwell's metaphor. The word of God, especially the Book of Mormon, contains such a breadth and depth of spiritual insight into our relationship with our Father in Heaven, His Son Jesus Christ, the children of God around us, and ourselves that, when we truly "lay hold upon the word," the sense of wonder that comes from roaming its endless halls will never go away. This book is Hogwarts, dude. It's so twisting and complicated and bold and real that it all just works. It just works perfectly.

Alma 12:9-10 :
"...It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.

"And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full."

~

The great mysteries the mansion will be revealed to those who explore it diligently. If you're already a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, my invitation is to spend time in the Book of Mormon's halls every single day. If you're not and you've read this far, give it a try. It'll brighten your day if you let it.

Week 39: Holding the Line - Fort Smith, Arkansas

Hey all!

I've had so many different ideas of what I've wanted to write about this week but for the sake of your time and my sleep schedule I'll stay concise as best as I can.

We've had lots of ups and downs lately. We've seen lots of miracles in our area specifically, but our zone as a whole is struggling pretty badly. As part of the missionary leadership here, I feel partially responsible. As a result, my confidence has been struggling and my spiritual lamp's flickered a bit at times, but "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28.) I know that God is teaching me patience, humility, and consecration through these experiences.

So here's an open question: how can I be more confident? In leadership, in trusting the Lord and other missionaries, in getting along with my companion... all that stuff. I'd love some help if you have any impressions.

On a brighter note, our friend Chase is choosing to be baptized this week! He's a super smart med student with a ton of friends in the Church already, so teaching him has been awesome. What's extra cool is that he'll be getting baptized on Good Friday and confirmed on Easter Sunday!

~

More fun stuff:

- a girl from my BYU ward got called to my mission! Shoutout to Sister Washburn.

- MLC! My favorite parts included some powerful workshops, lunch with my trainer and a bunch of other mission buddies, and a mission-wide invitation from President Collins to eliminate all negative talk of any kind.

- consecrated my study space and put away my hotwheels, minifigures, and almost anything not directly relating to do with Christ. All in, baby.

- befriended a turkey. Might be a one-sided relationship.

- Brother McClellan: Fort Smith First Ward's Temple and Family History leader and a popular biology professor at the local university. He's a super nice guy and his love of nature makes me want to be a biology professor too. Man...I'm just gonna quintuple major at this point.

- watched Elder Keller nearly get mauled by a terrifyingly vicious...corgi?

~

Thought: the most important holiday of the year.

Easter is a time to remember the suffering, death, and triumphal resurrection of Jesus Christ. As such, this holiday is a celebration of hope.

The adversary is fighting its hardest to drag us down into despair, and his power is real. The world offers many so-called strongholds to protect us from the harshness of reality, from substance abuse to immorality to digital devices, but the cold truth is that eventually they'll all make like the Alamo. None of them will survive the day.

There is one (and only one!) avenue to ultimate hope: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. "Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:5)

Jesus Christ makes everything better. Celebrating Easter means celebrating His universally positive influence. When we turn to Him, anger turns to peace, fear turns to faith, and despair turns to hope.

Isaiah 61:1-3:

"...the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified."

Week 38: Pupusa tornado - Fort Smith, Arkansas

Hey all!

Nine months! This transfer's absolutely flown by, but I'll still be staying with Elder Keller in Fort Smith, AR for another six weeks. Transfer calls always feel like a mixed bag, but I'm happy to be sticking around because three of our friends are being baptized in April!

Speaking of baptism, our friend Melannie was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this week! She's amazing and her family is so fun. πŸŒŠ

~

Fun stuff that happened:

- found a frog, a snake, and a couple of crawdads πŸ¦

- taught a lesson at an El Salvadorian restaurant in tornado weather

- became a jump-roping fiend. Simply the ultimate cardio

- an ambulance beat us to our media referral πŸ’€

- taught a lesson to this family while their friends were over, and, when we started teaching about the Book of Mormon, one of the little girls' friends was like "hey I have that on my phone already" and whipped out the Book of Mormon out of nowhere. Turns out her family had been visited by missionaries in the past so we popped over there with one of the youth a few days later and taught her family too πŸ’ͺ

- bought an eight-dollar "bag o' burgers" at Braum's and proceeded to eat a bag o' burgers. Well, half of it.

~

Thought: "The pattern is simple but not easy to follow."

*Note: I am not a dietician. There are arguments for and against keto as an actually healthy diet, but just bear with me for the analogy.

When going keto, the primary objective is changing your body's fuel source. When you eliminate carbs and replace them with fats, eventually your body starts running off of fat instead, and that conversion makes cutting weight exponentially easier.

In a spiritual context, consecration works the same. One of the biggest reasons we're asked to strive for 100% obedience despite the obvious fact that we're inherently imperfect is because God is trying to help us change our fuel source.

Even after cutting out social media and a few other distracting habits, I still find myself seeking out spiritual sugars at times, and, through seemingly inconsequential acts of escapism, miss out on spiritual ketosis. Big bummer. However, I know it's possible. The Lord promises that there will always be a way forward (1 Ne 3:7,) that He will always receive us as we repent (3 Nephi 9:22,) and that we will always have His help when we humble ourselves and rely on His strength (Ether 12.)

Some of my biggest role models are the missionaries whose spiritual engines are fueled by the powers of Heaven. As we strive to "'give away' even [our] favorite sins" and center ourselves upon our Savior, we too can become disciples who are powered by Jesus Christ.

Says our latter-day prophet, Russell M. Nelson:

"As we strive to live the higher laws of Jesus Christ, our hearts and our very natures begin to change. The Savior lifts us above the pull of this fallen world by blessing us with greater charity, humility, generosity, kindness, self-discipline, peace, and rest.

"Now, you may be thinking this sounds more like hard spiritual work than rest. But here is the grand truth: while the world insists that power, possessions, popularity, and pleasures of the flesh bring happiness, they do not! They cannot! What they do produce is nothing but a hollow substitute for 'the blessed and happy state of those [who] keep the commandments of God.'"

Invitation: What are your "spiritual sugars?" What things could you let go of today to become more fully converted to the infinite energy source of the Atonement of Jesus Christ?
