Week 78 - Andersen, Missouri

Merry Christmas :)

Song of the week: Not the Only One

Doctrine and Covenants 123:12-13, 17

For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it—

Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven

These should then be attended to with great earnestness.

...

Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

What a blessing it is to serve a mission for the Lord this Christmas.

Elder Rigby

Week 77: The Brother Darra Dog Trailer Incident

Never bringing an elderly church member to that guy's trailer again, that's for sure.

~

Hey all!

Hope you're having a good Christmas season. Christmas on the mission is different, but in this season of giving, I think the best gift we can give the Lord is to serve him with all our heart, might, mind, and strength. What's great about this gift is that it doesn't require any particular location, time, wealth, or ability. All it takes is you.

Highlights from this week in Missouri:

- Watched a guy total his car right in front of us. He was totally fine, but his car was leaking lots and lots of blue juice after the collision when I'm guessing it really shouldn't have been.

- One of our friends who was planning on being baptized all the way in March just kicked out her boyfriend who was being anti out and now she's living all the commandments so she wants to get baptized next week 😇

- Our friend Matt, who we taught at the temple last week, decided he wants to be baptized as soon as he can too! His mom's the lady who I just mentioned and his little sister is progressing well too so their whole family is about to join the fold!

- Found a huge empty lot in the middle of a neighborhood in the town of Pineville with nothing but a shed, some trees, and...an emu? It was just walkin' around in there. I...don't really know what to say.

- No more tapa mat 😔. I'm gonna be so for real, I've slept sooooo bad this last week haha. I was dead-set on toughing it out on the floor until I became a hardened mat-sleeper but after a full week of sore, groggy mornings I set my bed back up in shame.
Mat: 1, Elder Rigby: 0.

- Helped a couple who are going through it talk through some stuff and they both really want to turn their lives around and walk with God! We're not supposed to give personal advice as missionaries but they asked for "Jesus advice" so we're cool.

- Went caroling with the church youth and sang Christmas hymns to a whole bunch of friends we met and members we felt like stopping by! It was so awesome. We had one of our friends who wants to be baptized join us as well as two of our new members and one of our good pals who hasn't been to church in a while and saw some awesome miracles with them! We even found a guy who used to be taught by missionaries and decided he's coming to church again this Sunday! Plus, we got to sing to an older couple we'd just visited an hour ago and it made her cry ;). Music has power, man.

Songs of the week:
- "Anchor" by Novo Amor
- Hymn 214 "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"

What makes Latter-day Saints different? Why is it important?

If you're looking for a good way to give that Christmas present to the Savior that I mentioned at the start of my email, try this: watch this video, ask God the question it gives at the end, and act on the answer you feel. I promise you there's no happier way to live than following in the footsteps of Christ.

Merry Christmas!

Week 76 - Andersen, Missouri

 Kaselehl! Iah iremu?

Hope you're mao! This week got a little frosty but things are going well up here in Anderson. Here's some stuff that happened this week:

- My mom's birthday was on the 8th! One huge lesson I've learned on my mission is that wow, my parents are way better examples than I gave them credit for. I am so grateful for my mom and dad's incredible faith, wisdom, patience,  generosity, and love throughout my whole life. Love you :)

- We were having a kind of bummy day for reasons I couldn't do justice explaining with the time I have (but rest assured, they were pretty funny in hindsight), but when we visited some church members out on their farm to pick up some water bottles, the grandma made us PB&J sandwiches (my favorite) and gave us a whole loaf of Grandma Sycamore's white gold straight from Utah. Thank goodness God made grandmas.

- We found an incinerated smart car. Neat

- Some dogs are nice, some are not nice.

- Main street Anderson, Missouri tells you a whole lot about the kind of folks that live here. We've got a bank, a barbershop, a trading card store, a diner,  a donut shop, an island market, and a taxidermist. Throw in a Walmart a half an hour away and that there's 'bout all a feller needs 'round these parts.

- Speaking of island markets, I decided to dive full-send into the local Micronesian culture and bought a two-ply tapa mat after looking for a good one for months. Mat gang. I'm a certified floor-sleeper now.

- I pet a hairless cat for the first time in my whole life when we pulled up to the card shop and he was both the cutest and the ugliest thing I saw all day today. His name was Neebs

- We went out to lunch with my friend Madi's aunt completely by accident haha. It's a small world in the Church, ain't it.

- I forgot to write about it last Wednesday, but we had interviews with our mission president last week! The first part of my interview was mostly just a vent sesh (I love Elder Perry don't worry) and once I was done President Hathaway gave me some awesome counsel as per usual. Moral of the story? Before 1 Nephi 3:7 comes 1 Nephi 3:6. The choicest blessings await those who murmur not.

~

Miracle of the week: our friend Matt came to church with his mom out of nowhere! His mom and sister are super good friends with the member family who lives next door and are both preparing to be baptized soon, but he never acted super interested and didn't tend to stick around for lessons, let alone join the family for church. But there he was! And that's just the beginning of the story.

Matt joined the other young men in class after the Sacrament Meeting ended and heard them all talking about going on a youth temple trip the next Tuesday. He asked about what the temple was and proceeded to be taught about God's Plan of Happiness for the entire rest of the hour. As soon as he heard that he could be baptized for his dad who passed away before having the chance to, he immediately decided this church was worth a real, hard look.

Matt decided to join the youth temple trip and stay in the waiting room while they did baptisms, so our bishop asked if we could tag along and teach him more about God's plan for him and his family while inside the temple. I mean, wow. Talk about an ideal first lesson with a friend. The Holy Spirit was there in force and he absolutely loved the things he learned. He said it made perfect sense to him and he was excited to learn more and build his relationship with the Savior!

I'm out of time for a full thought today, but hopefully that story counts this time! If you're looking for new study material, try using the Come Follow Me–For Home and Church manuals. I don't know how to describe why I like them without sounding like an advertisement so let me just say they're free and they're awesome. Here's a link to the digital versions:

Week 75 - Andersen, Missouri

 Hey all!

Another week in the sticks 🎅🏕️

I'm starting to really love this place. The pace sure is different from Fayetteville and the UofA but the folks are just so kind and humble and the sulphur in the water here really spices up normally boring activities like brushing my teeth, showering, drinking water, etc.

I don't have a whole lot of time tonight so I'll keep this one short, but even if I can't write all of them, rest assured that something bizarre and/or wonderful happens to the missionaries in Anderson every single day.

 This week, I/we...

 - ate two Thanksgiving dinners with only an hour in between them 🥴

- found a cool millipede in the basement. 10/10 would recommend basement millipede-watching

- played guess the body part with Pohnpeian mystery barbecue. Think I got an elbow

- found out that I lived with my current companion Elder Perry's cousin, who's also named Elder Perry, in Bentonville almost exactly a year ago!

- started working with an awesome younger couple named, the Lionhearts, to streamline our ward records and visit lost members of the fold who might not have had contact with the Church for a while. I don't really know how to describe how awesome they are. Both of them converted to the Church 6 and 12 years ago, respectively, and have been an absolute power couple since they got married a year ago. Plus, their chocolate lab Aslan is a nice stand-in for Charlie too (you're still #1 Charlie don't worry)

- finished the Book of Mormon again! As always, please try it for yourself and ask God. He will never lead you wrong.

Song of the week: "Here I Am Again" by Luz Ysabelle Cuevas (see Sacred Music app)

Check out this awesome nativity video called "The Christ Child"! It's definitely worth a watch: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/video/light-the-world/2019-09-0050-the-christ-child-a-nativity-story-lighttheworld-1080p?lang=eng

Scripture of the week: Moroni 10:7-19

~

Cool story:

Last night, we decided to stop at the gas station called Casey's to buy some drinks on the way to the church building and casually struck up a conversation with a nice young couple while in line–nothing super gospel-related, just about the best flavor of Naked Juice and how Casey's apparently considers beef to be a viable pizza topping–and I introduced myself as a missionary and pointed to my tag...which I then realized was on the sweater I was wearing underneath my jacket. Whoops. Accidentally went undercover for a minute there. Well, now that the cat was out of the bag we talked for a few seconds more and they went to buy their beef pizzas and that was it.

...Or so we thought.

Flash forward to later that evening and we're meeting with the Lionhearts again and Sister Lionheart offhandedly mentions that her friend who wants to start coming back to church more will be joining us for dinner this Saturday with her boyfriend/husband(?) who isn't a member of the Church and she just happened to have the same unusual name as the girl from the couple we'd talked to at the gas station. We asked what her
boyfriend-husband-man-dude's name was and sure enough, we'd talked to them not two hours earlier. The Lord prompted us to open our mouths in the most unlikely of places and when we did, we unknowingly made friends with the people we're hopefully going to start teaching in a few days! God is real and good.

Love you all!
